The pop star Britney Spears is divorcing her husband, dancer and aspiring rapper Kevin Federline, marking the end of the 24-year-old singer's second marriage. While her first lasted just 55 hours, her second endured for more than two years and produced two children.
The divorce petition filed on Tuesday with the Los Angeles superior court cites "irreconcilable differences" between the two, with Spears claiming custody of the children, aged one and two months.
The filing identifies the date of the couple's separation as Monday, the same day that Spears made a surprise appearance on a live television show to flaunt her post-pregnancy physique. Monday also saw the couple lose a defamation suit they had brought against a mass market tabloid magazine, Us Weekly, which had alleged that the singer and her husband had recorded a sex videotape.
The judge in the case, also heard in LA's superior court, ruled that the singer had exploited her sexuality in a public and profitable manner, and that her public image would not be defamed by the allegation that she had made a sex tape.
"The plaintiff herself has put her modern sexuality squarely, and profitably, before the public eye," said Judge Lisa Hart Cole in her decision. "The issue is whether it is defamatory to state that a husband and wife taped themselves engaging in consensual sex."
In this case, she concluded, it was not, because Spears has "publicly portrayed herself in a sexual way in her performance, in published photographs and in [a] reality show."
I feel so sorry for Britney it seems as though nothing is going her way. First the sex tape and now her divorce. Even though I must admit she can do a lot better than K-Fed.
